Film about Iraq War to be shown February 22 in Buffalo

"Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers" will be screened on Thursday February 22, 7 pm at Hallwalls, 341 Delaware Ave. Buffalo. This is the story of what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war. Acclaimed director Robert Greenwald ("Uncovered, Unconstitutional, Outfoxed, and Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price") takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows, and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction - and destruction - of Iraq. Peace Rally in Buffalo, Sunday February 18

A Peace Rally will be held on Sunday February 18 at  6:00 pm, at Pilgrim-St. Luke's United Church of Christ, 335 Richmond Ave. at W. Utica, Buffalo.  Bill Marx of Pax Christi Western New York will speak.  Music by Nan Hoffman, Michael Meldrum, and Glenn Wallace.  There will be opportunities for getting involved.  Refreshments will be served. 

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate at UB, February 2

Protest of Bush war plan - Thursday January 11 in Buffalo

On Thursday January 11 at 5:00, a protest will be held to express opposition to President Bush's plan to raise troop levels, increase spending, and escalate the war in Iraq.  The location will be Lafayette Square (Main & Court Streets) in Buffalo.   

Vigil in Buffalo to Mark 3,000th US Military Death in Iraq

The following has been submitted by the WNY Peace Center in Buffalo: 

To date, approximately 2,950 US servicemen and women have died as a result of our war on Iraq. Tragically, that number is likely to grow to 3,000 sometime in the first half of January. Please join us to mourn those lost and call for the safe return of all our troops.  At 6:00 pm on the day after the 3,000th death is announced, there will be a vigil to mark these deaths.  The location will be Bidwell Park (Elmwood and Bidwell) in Buffalo.  

Note:  The vigil was held January 1, 2007.

Interfaith Peace Service, Sunday January 7 in Buffalo

With the Iraq War approaching its fourth year, and with the 3,000th US military fatality in Iraq looming, local faith leaders feel the need to mourn those lost while reaffirming their call for an end to war. Join us for "Peace Yearnings," an interfaith event featuring readings, music, and cultural presentations which stress that the desire for peace is shared by all faiths and peoples, Sunday January 7 at 6:00 pm.  The location the Montante Cultural Center, 2021 Main St., Buffalo.

39th Annual Western NY Peace Center dinner - November 9 in Buffalo

The 39th Annual Western New York Peace Center dinner will be held Thursday, November 9 at 6:00 pm at the Buffalo Convention Center, Franklin near Court. The cost is $35. The keynote speaker is Paul Kawika Martin, Political and PAC director for Peace Action in Washington, DC. Paul is the movement's top man on Captitol Hill, connecting the grassroots with our allies in Congress. In the wake of the upcoming elections, Paul will speak on "Congress and the Peace Movement: Where Do We Go From Here?" Congresswoman Louise Slaughter will also be there to receive a special award recognizing her support for bringing our troops home from Iraq.

Please note - CPJ members Bill and Nancy Stock will be attending.  They have enjoyed the dinners in the past as opportunities to hear excellent speakers, visit informative booths, meet with other peace-minded people, and purchase fair-trade items.  They have let the CPJ know that tickets can be purchased at a discount if an organization reserves a table for eight.  Anyone interested in going should contact Bill and Nancy at 965-2687.

Phyllis Bennis Lecture on Middle East Crisis - Tuesday October 10 at UB

On Tuesday October 10 at 7:30 pm, the WNY Peace Center, the UB Progressive Alliance and the Center for Comparative and Global Studies in Education will present Phyllis Bennis, the leading progressive foreign policy analyst in the country and a founder of United for Peace and Justice, and the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.  All are invited to hear Ms. Bennis's insights on ongoing Israel/Lebanon/Palestine crisis and the prospects for a just peace.  The location is the UB Center for the Arts Screening Room.  (See http://www.ubcfa.org/Webmodules/event/calendar.aspx for information about directions and the presentation.)

Ms. Bennis has been a writer, analyst and activist on Middle East and UN issues for many years. While working as a journalist at the United Nations during the run-up to the 1990-91 Gulf War, she began working on U.S. domination of the UN, and stayed involved in work on Iraq sanctions and disarmament, and later U.S. war and occupation in Iraq.  In 1999 Phyllis accompanied a group of congressional aides to Iraq to examine the impact of U.S.-led economic sanctions on humanitarian conditions there, and later joined former UN Assistant Secretary General Denis Halliday, who resigned his position as Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq to protest the impact of sanctions, in a speaking tour. In 2001 she helped found and currently co-chairs the U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation. She works closely with the United for Peace and Justice anti-war coalition, and since 2002 has played an active role in the growing global peace movement.

Western NY Peace Center holds Rally for a Ceasefire in Lebanon, Tuesday July 25 in Buffalo

The Western NY Peace Center will hold a Rally for a Ceasefire in Lebanon,Tuesday, July 25 at 5 pm, at the Dulski Federal Building, Delaware and Huron, Downtown Buffalo The world community stands united in demanding a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement to the current crisis in Lebanon. Yet our government has refused to call for an end to the destruction in Lebanon. Join us on Tuesday to call on our representatives to support an immediate ceasefire.

CPJ at Fredonia Farm Festival, August 25-27 - will sell Fair Trade Coffee

CPJ will have an informational table at the Fredonia Farm Festival, Friday August 25 - Sunday August 27 at downtown Fredonia's Barker Common. 

Fair Trade Coffee will be available for purchase.  The coffee is from Equal Exchange, an organization whose mission is "to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker co-operatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world."  More information can be found at  http://www.equalexchange.com/.    

Executive Director of NYS Peace Action to speak about Iran at Unitarian Church in Buffalo

Melissa Van, Executive Director of New York State Peace Action, recently returned from a month-long visit to Iran sponsored by the Fellowship of Reconciliation. She will share her impressions of Iran, its people and culture, and the controversy over its disputed nuclear program at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Ferry and Elmwood in Buffalo, on Thursday July 13 at 7:00 pm.  Refreshments will be provided.  For more info, call (716)894-2013.

CPJ's Annual Nicaragua Appeal begins Monday July 10

Again this year, in conjuction with Catholic social worker Ann Marie Zon, the CPJ will organize the collection of items to help the poor in Nicaragua.  Non-perishable food, household items, clothes and footwear suitable for warm weather, school supplies, toys (not toy guns), and linens will be welcome.  (Please do not send computer related items, books or games written in English, clothes hangers, or curtain rods.) 

The effort will begin on Monday July 10 and run through the end of July.  Please drop off items at the Houck residence on 146 Central Ave. in Fredonia.  Please ring the doorbell for the Houcks to open the garage.  If they are not home, donations can be pleased on the front porch.

SUNY Fredonia to host lecture regarding Middle East politics - Tuesday April 11

Religious scholar Reza Aslan, author of the book, No god but God: The Origins, Evolution and Future of Islam, will speak on the subject of politics in the Middle East at SUNY Fredonia Tuesday, April 11 at 8 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.

Tickets, $1, are available at the door.

Mr. Aslan’s book, published by Random House in 2005, is a call to reform and a proposal to end the religious battle between East and West. Born in Iran, Mr. Aslan lives in the United States, and is a research associate at the University of Southern California’s Center on Public Diplomacy.

Ilya Kaminsky, one of the founders of Poets for Peace, to read at SUNY Fredonia April 12

Ilya Kaminsky, award-winning poet who immigrated to America from the Ukraine at the age of 16, will celebrate National Poetry Month at SUNY Fredonia with a reading and book-signing Wednesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in Jewett Hall Room 101. The event is free and open to all.

Deaf since the age of four, he came to the U.S. in 1994 as a teenager with his family, not knowing a word of English. Rampant crime, inflation and anti-Semitism had forced his parents to request political asylum, and upon receiving it, they settled in Rochester, NY.  Now a resident of Berkeley, CA, Mr. Kaminsky will begin teaching in the graduate writing program at San Diego State University this fall. He is one of the founders of Poets For Peace, an organization which sponsors poetry readings in the United States and abroad with a goal of supporting such relief organizations as Doctors Without Borders and Survivors International.

SUNY Fredonia's Amnesty International chapter to sponsor walk-a-thon to benefit African Well Fund

On Saturday April 8 at 10:30 am, the Amnesty International chapter at SUNY Fredonia will hold a five mile walk-a-thon to benefit the African Well Fund. This organization believes that access to safe, consumable water is not merely a basic human need, but a basic human right.  Its goal is to raise money for the construction and maintenance of clean water wells in Sub-Saharan Africa.  The walk, under the title "Walk In Her Shoes" will begin at the Peace Pole on the SUNY Fredonia campus (between Mason Hall and the Williams Center), and continue north on Central Avenue to Dunkirk, west on Route 5, and south on Brigham Road, which will become Temple Avenue and back to campus.  There will be a small picnic at the end of the walk with food and refreshments.  The Amnesty chapter plans to charge $3  per person and welcomes donations.  (Checks should be made out to "African Well Fund.")  The event is open to everyone.
